Hey, if any of you guys are on Reddit, could you go ask for me why they’ve never done a MaxFunCon in the Midwest? I know of at least a half dozen people (including myself) who have asked for one, and I can’t imagine that it’s only me and my friends who are interested. I’d love to go to one, but it’s pretty costly to fly and pay for a resort weekend.

Also maybe ask if most MaxFunCon listeners are millionaires, because I can’t think of any other group that can afford to pay $790 for a weekend vacation. (And that’s just for half of a double occupancy. I know it includes lodging, food, a spiffy t-shirt and all the Michael Ian Black you could dream of, but you still have to get to LA and drive two hours east to get to this.) It just seems to me like a lot of the people who would really enjoy and benefit from MaxFunCon (particularly artists and creative types, and also myself) aren’t really able to afford something that’s geared towards them.

We don’t do a MaxFunCon in the Midwest because there are relatively few entertainment professionals in the Midwest, and an even smaller number of entertainment professionals I know well enough to ask to work for free. If we flew fifty people in (that’s how many staff/performers/teachers are at MaxFunCon), we would be asking for two additional days of their time, plus we’d have to buy fifty round-trip plane tickets.

MaxFunCon is very reasonably priced for what it is. Many similar “meeting of the minds” events cost thousands. I just looked up what it would cost to spend a weekend at Club Med, and it’s $100 more than MaxFunCon. And I bet there isn’t an amazing performer or teacher for every three paid attendees at Club Med.

Our profit margin is very modest - we make enough money on MaxFunCon to pay for our events director’s salary, and that’s about it. There’s not really any way for us to do something similar to MaxFunCon and charge less money. We have worked very, very hard to make MaxFunCon as affordable as possible. MaxFunCon costs about the same as three nights in a big-city hotel. Less than it cost me to get an Air BnB for three nights at South by Southwest, at which I’m speaking but which didn’t provide airfare or a place to stay.

I would describe most of people who go to MaxFunCon as middle-class or as professionals, not millionaires. They are designers and librarians and teachers who value the experience very highly, because it’s fucking amazing.

That said: I understand not everyone can go, I wouldn’t expect everyone to be able to. About 175 people buy tickets to MaxFunCon out of the hundreds of thousands of listeners to MaxFun shows. I would love to do an event that tens or hundreds of thousands could attend, but I don’t think that’s in my future. In the meantime, fans can enjoy our podcasts.

We give away all of our shows for free, no strings attached. We’re just trying to keep the lights on.

i went to maxfun con in 2012 and it was a blast. the cost isn’t any different than any other major weekend events when you factor in all costs (its actually a bit cheaper). i’ve done things like pax and gencon and the maxfun con was one of the most intimate and fun experiences i’ve had at a ‘con’. well worth the cost. as a reference, i live in texas so i have to fly to all these events.
